We offer here a range of Hepaticas from our ever growing nobilis var. japonica collection. We're also hybridising a few of our own which will be available shortly - mainly singles but we're selecting the best colours right now! We try our best to get the spellings of these name correct but there is some confusion through the translation.
Hardiness - We have had many of these planted out in our woodland garden since 2019 with excellent results. In the mild winters we noticed that they behave almost identically to nobilis which everyone regards as fully hardy. The leaves may look a little untidy in the spring but we would recommend removal anyway as soon as the new flower buds start to rise - February-ish. In the harder winter which we had (their first year in the ground) they fully defoliated but grew away absolutely fine with the flowers unaffected.
Because they do flower very early we would recommend that, if you do try them outside, you plant them under the overhang of a shrub or against a house wall. This will afford a little protection against the last frosts while they are in flower.
Variability
We find that many of these beautiful hybrids will grow one year absolutely fine but the next year the flower may differ in some way. Some doubles may turn semi-double or even single but the flower colour generally remains the same. Plants with petalloid stamens will turn almost fully double. We believe this may be the effect of timing of division of these plants and the vigour plus other environmental factors such as light levels, nutrient availability and temperature etc at the time of flower bud set. What we do know is that they do return to their normal state! All currently supplied in 9cm square pots.
We have maybe 25 to 30 new hybrids available which we will be listing as soon as they come into flower. We do this to confirm they are correct - watch this space!
